On September 24, 1998 the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This National Memorial Day gives Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, which made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.
The Canadian Police and Peace Officers Annual Memorial Service honours the memory of our brave women and men who gave their lives in the service of their communities. We gather annually to ensure the magnitude of their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The first Memorial was held in 1978 and honoured 14 officers. Today the names of over 896 fallen officers are engraved on the Honour Roll tablets next to the Summer Pavilion overlooking the Ottawa River.
On Sunday, September 24, 1978, a special service and tribute was held on Parliament Hill. The site selected was Parliament, the place where laws are made that directly impact on police officer safety and, ultimately the quality of life for us all.
